This place is perennial

by Halie and Jediah Finney

These experiences are perennial, growing strawberries and carrots, the raspberries and flowers found along the road, the lake and its fish and their patterns, mom’s pie, and the train that goes by three times a day. These are very normal scenes for us, and probably many other people, but they are so meaningful. Their repetition makes them something to rely on. The repetitive nature of the video is reflective of those cycles that have gone on for decades. The lengthy process of making all of the shadow puppets and using stop-motion animation made all these small moments last longer.

halie finney

Halie Finney is a multidisciplinary Metis artist and tattooist from Treaty 8, specifically the Lesser Slave Lake Area, more specifically Canyon Creek. Her and her family’s memories and stories of this place form Halie’s disjointed narratives that highlight the connections between generations, life and death, and the unchanging but also ever changing landscape that they all share. These little stories act as a personal mythology to fill in the gaps of information in her family history and celebrate feelings of nostalgia, grief, comfort, and other feelings you might have if you’re deeply rooted in a small town in northern Alberta.

Currently, Halie resides in Edmonton, Alberta, where she works as an artist and tattooist, and is a core member of Ociciwan.
